Despite critics back home, Barcelona star Lionel Messi plans to play for Argentina if called upon by coach Gerardo Martino. There was some question about Messi’s national team status.
“I never said that I wasn’t going to play any longer with the national team. More than how they killed me [media], they weren’t going to kill me any more,” Messi told ESPN FC radio on Thursday. “I am used to them saying these types of things. Now we have friendlies and as long as the coach calls me up I am going to continue to be present.”
Messi won UEFA’s Best Player in Europe for the 2014-15 season on Thursday for his part in Barcelona’s Treble. Teammate Luis Suarez and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo were the other two finalists.
“This prize brings me a lot of joy,” Messi told reporters. “It was an incredible year for us. I don’t know about secrets, but there is a united dressing room which was able to have an incredible year.
“It came out as we wanted, and we achieved our objectives. I want to thank all my teammates. We all represent something. If not for all of them, not Barca, nor I, would be here.”
