Wayne Rooney scored a hat trick and was Man of the Match as Manchester United beat Club Brugge 4-0 in the return leg of the Champions League qualification playoffs.
Rooney, 29, had gone almost 10 games without scoring for United in a competitive game, going back to last season. But he was on point in Brugge on Wednesday as he scored a hat trick for the Red Devils. United were up 3-1 from the first leg in Manchester, but they kept their foot on the gas and dominated the Belgians on their home field.
Rooney opened up the scoring in the 20th minute. After a nice run into the penalty area, Rooney was served the ball at his feet by Memphis Depay and slotted it in behind Sinan Bolat in the Brugge net. Rooney then added two more goals in the second half to complete his hat trick and secure United going through to the Champions League group stage.
Ander Herrera started the game in midfield for United and he set Rooney up for the second goal at the 49 minute mark. Herrera squared the ball inside the penalty area to Rooney who just had to put it into an open net.
Rooney completed the hat trick in the 57th minute when he made it 3-0. This time it was Juan Mata that provided the assist as he put a ball on Rooney’s feet inside the penalty area and the United captain hit it with his right foot underneath Bolat and into the back of the net.
Herrera made it 4-0 in the 63rd minute after getting a breakaway after a great through ball by Bastian Schweinsteiger. Herrera made no mistake one-on-one with Bolat. Javier Hernandez had the possibility to make it 5-0 after United were awarded a penalty but the Mexican international blasted the ball wide to the right.
United beat Brugge 7-1 on aggregate and move on to the group stage of the Champions League. The group drawings takes place on Thursday.
