Stoke Pushed To Penalties In Capital One Cup

Stoke City were pushed to the brim by League Two side Luton Town in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday. Stoke went through to the next round after penalties.

Stoke sits in 15th place in the Premier League after three games. The Potters has two draws and one loss so far, but were surely looking at the game against Luton as an easy win. Luton plays in League Two, which is the fourth division of English soccer, and sits in 22nd place after four games with two losses and two draws.

Stoke did play some players that are usually not in the starting lineup, but still had big names like Peter Crouch, Bojan Krkic and Stephen Ireland to start the game. Jonathan Walters gave Stoke the lead in the 67th minute. Walters made a run into the penalty box after a great through ball by ireland and lobbed the ball over Elliot Justham in the Luton net.

But Luton didn’t give up despite falling behind to their Premier League opponents. Cameron McGeehan tied it up 1-1 in stoppage time. Scott Griffiths came flying down the left flank and put in a great cross that McGeehan met with his right foot and slotted it home from close range in behind Stoke goalkeeper Shay Given.

After two 15 minute half of extra time, the game had to be decided on penalties. Stoke managed to draw the longest straw and won 8-7. Luton put on a spirited performance and the fans at Kenilworth Road will surely be talking about this game for some time to come.
